For extended space travel, humans could rely on materials mined from asteroids.

According to researchers at Western University's Institute for Earth and Space Exploration, microbes and organic compounds from asteroids can be used to create edible biomass or food. Their method solves the problem of bringing adequate food on future space voyages to other planets or perhaps beyond.

If that happens, humans can travel further from Earth.
