How could we ever forecast human behavior if even the most essential aspects of our lives, weather, traffic, and sickness, violate scientific expectations? Tom Stoppard wanted to investigate the scientific basis of this ambiguity and how it might disturb our view of history in his play "Arcadia," which premiered in 1993. Bedlam's new production makes an admirable effort to update 2023 audiences on Stoppard's sophisticated explorations of chaos theory, Newtonian law, thermodynamics, and metaphysics, but the outcome is confusing. And that may be the best evidence that Stoppard makes a brilliant but frustrating argument.
