The monument was composed of 56 evenly spaced [holes] surrounding a circle of enormous, beautifully tooled stone arches. Archaeologists believe that the monument has significant astrological significance because of the stones and holes' exact proportions. Alternately, the researchers propose that there may have been 56 families, clans, or other social groups that contributed to the construction of Stonehenge and had the right to excavate one of the [holes] and utilize it for the interment of cremated remains.
