As a result of pervasive instability and gang violence, the crime rate in Haiti has more than quadrupled in the past year, according to recent statistics.
According to data obtained by the Haitian National Police and the UN, the number of violent crimes committed in the first quarter of 2023 rose to over 1,600 from 692 in the corresponding time the previous year.
