More and more nations are debating whether or not to criminalize ecocide.
Politicians in Mexico are the most recent to propose criminalizing environmental harm as a means of discouraging it and providing justice for its victims. Nuevo León lawmaker Karina Marlen Barrón Perales has introduced legislation to Mexico's legislature creating the crime of "ecocide."
