Before, camping reservations at Old Federal Campground could be done vid the Recreation.gov website. However, the campground is now under the management of Hall County in Georgia and reservations now go thru them.

Summer Camping Weekend Itinerary at Old Federal Campground at Lake Lanier
Friday: Arrival and Settle In
Ideally, you would arrive at 1:00 PM which is when check-in starts. However, for us working blokes, the best we can do is leave work early and check-in before 6:60 PM which is when the office closes.
- 4:00 PM – Check In & Set Up Camp – Arrive early to grab the best daylight for pitching your tent or setting up your RV. Many of the sites at Old Federal are lakeside, so take a moment to appreciate the views while you settle in.
- 6:00 PM – Easy Dinner by the Fire – Kick off your weekend with a simple foil-packet meal or burgers on the grill. Bring pre-marinated veggies and meats to make prep a breeze.
- 7:30 PM – Sunset Stroll Along the Shore – As the sun dips behind the water, take a short walk along the lake’s edge. The campground offers peaceful, low-traffic paths and unbeatable lake views.
- 9:00 PM – Campfire & S’mores – End the evening with the crackle of a campfire. Roast marshmallows, tell stories, and enjoy the stars overhead—no light pollution here.
Saturday: Adventure & Relaxation

- 12:30 PM – Lakeside Lunch – Make sandwiches or grill something simple. Bring along a picnic blanket and eat by the water for a relaxing midday break.
- 2:00 PM – Hammock Nap or Trail Walk – Find some shade, string up a hammock, and take a well-deserved nap. Or, if you’re feeling active, explore the nearby nature trails.
- 5:30 PM – Fishing or Photography – Old Federal is great for shore fishing. Cast a line and see what bites. Not a fisher? Bring your camera as sunsets over the lake are magical.
- 7:00 PM – BBQ Dinner & Sunset – Cook up something hearty for dinner like grilled chicken, corn on the cob, baked potatoes. Then settle in for another unforgettable sunset over the lake.

- 10:00 AM – One Last Look – Before heading out, walk down to the lake one last time. Dip your toes in, snap a photo, or just stand quietly and listen to the sounds of summer.
- 12:00 PM – Check Out – Be sure to leave your site cleaner than you found it. Pack up all trash and dump it at the designated dumping area and double-check for any left-behind gear.

- Bring a portable fan: Again, it gets hot and you will need a fan when you settle down at night I your tent. I personally use this camping fan with LED lantern from JINLICTE. This bad boy is great and as I used it for 8 hours straight throughout the night and still had 75% battery charge remaining in the morning!
- Use citronella or bug spray: The lakeside can be buggy in the evenings and having to deal with bug bites is not a fun way to spend camping. I personally use Off insect repellent lotion for adults and kids. I particularly like that one because it’s not greasy or sticky and actually works.
